Why are Digital Voice Recorders so popular?
While Micro and Mini cassette recorders are cost-effective and capable recording devices, digital voice recorders, which offer recording time of up to and over 20 hours and other advanced features, are fast becoming the recording tool of choice among business professionals and students.
Whether you need to record lectures, interviews, meetings or simply short notes and comments, digital voice recordings last longer than tape, can be easily retrieved, downloaded to your PC - and automatically converted to text with software.

Do Digital Voice Recorders really make heavy dictation easier?
Digital Voice Recorders include ways for PC download. This allows you to transfer all of your voice recordings to your computer. After the transfer, you can delete the contents of your recorder and still be able to archive the recordings on your PC. By downloading recordings to your computer, you can email them to a Transcription Service. These files are usually very small and can be easily sent over a company network or the Internet.
When using the Olympus DS-5000, you also get the added advantage of a convenient slide control which reduces stress on your wrist and hand whilst providing the optimal interface to recording control.

What does Speech recognition software do?
Since a digital recording is just a sound file, if the file is recorded under a high quality mode it can be used in conjunction with speech recognition software. All you need to do is download your speech file, then launch the voice-to-text software. The software does the rest.

Is there a big difference between SP and LP mode?

Typical digital recorders hold from ninety minutes to twenty-two hours of recording time. However, the longer recording mode results in a lesser quality of recorded sound. Like a VCR, most digital recorders have SP and LP modes (Now even HQ and SHQ!). When you need excellent sound quality, use SP mode, which may only offer up to 30 minutes of recording time (5 hours on a 32mb card in DSS format DS4000 - 8 hours on 1gb in MP3 format VT50 1gb) . When you need to record for long periods, use LP mode, even though it will reduce the quality of sound.

Can I store many recordings on a Digital Voice Recorder?
All digital recorders have folders to make it very easy to find recordings. Each folder can store up to 99 messages (recordings) or more. With multiple folders, you can use one to record all messages and another folder to keep important messages transferred from the first folder. Some recorders also have a Schedule folder, where you can store recordings by date for easy retrieval. This is very useful for expense reporting, schedule tracking and journal keeping.

What other capabilities, if any, do Digital Voice Recorders have?
The Denpa records in MP3, and also supports MP3 and WMA playback.

What style / type of digital recorder do I need?
There are many digital recorders on the market. They all have different purposes and can be used in many ways. For a user who will use the recorder mainly for dictating letters or notes and wishes to be able to make corrections to there work on the recorder, the recorders on our website under digital dictation would be the only option. For recording large meeting and interviews with very few notes (no dictation) and the option or need to add additional mics the recorders to consider would be within the digital recorder section. Recording smaller interviews or recording school or uni lectures the digital notetakers would be the recorder to select. Many of the notetakers have direct PC connectivity which can offer easy uploading and downloading; they are very cost effective with little to no sound quality lost over the more expensive models.

tips on olympus micro-cassette
Why should I buy a Micro cassette recorder?
With a price as low as $90 and a tape size over 50% smaller than a standard-sized tape, Micro-cassette recorders are an affordable, compact solution for recording meetings and interviews and dictating. Supply of tapes is slowly becoming an issue as Olympus has discontinued its top end recorders and has no transcribing machines on the market in Australia. A small notetaker such as the Denpa VT30FM or Olympus WS range may be a modern solution.
Despite their small size, Microcassette recorders are designed to withstand heavy use and have a tape quality superior to that of a regular cassette recorder. Whether your recordings will be used as evidence or you will record over a tape many times, Micro-cassette recorders are up to the job.

Whats the benefit of Voice Activation?
Perfect for lectures and meetings, Voice Activation means you no longer need to hit the pause button whenever theres a period of silence in a class or meeting. It will stop the recorder when there is no sound, and begin playing when sound starts up again. Its a great way to conserve tape space and battery life.

How helpful is Auto Reverse?
Sometimes changing the tape is disruptive when you are recording a meeting or discussion. Auto reverse automatically flips the tape over so you can leave the recorder alone, which can be especially helpful during long sessions.

Should I get a recorder with Indexing capability?
A tape counter is great, but what if you forget to re-set it each time? If your recorder has indexing, you can physically mark a spot on the tape. When rewinding, you will hear a sound indicating different recordings. This feature is great for locating messages, letters and meetings - whatever you record - and for giving instructions to a secretary or transcription service.

Can a slide-switch recorder make recording easier?
With a push-button recorder, its tough to record and play back complicated information without looking at the buttons. A slide-switch recorder has only one switch that records, plays, rewinds and fast-forwards at various positions. This makes it easy to dictate and double check complex information and legal documents.

Is there a place to plug in accessories?
If you want to plug in a microphone or use an AC adapter to conserve the battery, external jacks make it easier to expand your recorders functionality. This feature is especially great for presentations and such.

tips on philips mini-cassette
Why should I buy a Mini cassette recorder?
Priced at $250 for a entry level machine, mini cassette is cost effective solution for low use dictation and transcription use.

Supply of Mini cassette recorders and transcribers?
Mini is still a current line with Philips AU so supply is not an issue. We always aim to keep at least one of the recorders and transcribers in stock at all times.
